The Zodiac’s Desire To Be Acknowledged

Although we have yet to find the Zodiac’s true identity, the Zodiac’s letters provide some insight into his personality, his motives, and his desires. While reading his letters, it’s impossible to miss the fact that, although it seems the Zodiac had no plans of really revealing his identity, he still wanted to be acknowledged for his abilities.

The Zodiac Couldn’t Remain Completely Unknown

Sending his letters entailed a certain amount of risk, but the Zodiac wasn’t content to remain totally unknown. Not only did he send his letters to local newspapers and other individuals – he also frequently demanded that portions of his writings and/or ciphers be published for the public’s viewing.

What He Wanted The People To Think Of Him

The Zodiac’s letters also give the reader a sense of what he thought of himself and what he wanted others to think of him. His repeated gloating about evading the police makes it clear he thought himself very clever, and wanted others to think of him as clever, too. He often sent threats in his letters as well, which seems to indicate he relished being feared by others. Additionally, his threats likely gave him a further sense of control over the public at large. In short, through his letters The Zodiac was able to construct a persona for himself as someone who was intelligent, powerful, and an authority to be obeyed.
