The Zodiac Killer Case Remains Unsolved For 50+ Years

It has been more than 50 years since the first confirmed victims of the Zodiac Killer were found. After terrorizing the people of Northern California through the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Zodiac seemingly disappeared. Where did he go? Will he ever be found? Can the answers to this decades-old serial killer case finally be found after all these years? Only time will tell.

Why Is He Called “The Zodiac Killer”?

One of the many unanswered questions about the Zodiac Killer case is the reasoning behind his pseudonym. Those less familiar with the Zodiac Killer case might assume that the killer had some direct link with the astrology concept of the Zodiac. While this remains a possibility, there are no certain answers available at the moment.

The Zodiac Killer is called such because he gave himself that moniker in his letters. Specifically, he referred to himself as “the Zodiac.” The earliest letters attributed to the Zodiac – including the Bates letters (Bates letter 1, Bates letter 2, Bates letter 3) sent on April 30th, 1967 and the July 31st, 1969 letters sent to the Vallejo Times-Herald, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the San Francisco Examiner don’t include the moniker.

It wasn’t until August 4th, 1969 that the Zodiac first included the now-infamous line: “This is the Zodiac speaking.” Following this letter, the Zodiac opened most of his correspondence with this same line.
