Richard Gaikowski had a history in the military and medical training that arguably he could have put to good use if he were the Zodiac. Arthur Leigh Allen 

Arthur Leigh Allen was a school teacher at the time of one of the earliest murders that some think may have been a Zodiac murder – the murder of Cheri Jo Bates. He was near the location when she died and admitted to friends that he had peculiar interests, such as a fascination with the concept of hunting humans for sport. 

Richard Marshall 

Richard Marshall, known to some as Rick, was part of the Navy for several years. Originally born In Texas, he moved to the California area during the time of the Zodiac’s activity. He became a Zodiac suspect because of some suspicious comments he made over his ham radio. 

Lawrence Kane 

Lawrence Kane was born as Lawrence Klien in Brooklyn, NY on April 29, 1924. According to the sister of Darlene Ferrin, confirmed Zodiac victim Kane had a fixation on Ferrin, following her for months shortly before she was murdered. followed Darlene for months, shortly before she was murdered. Further evidence that he may be the Zodiac came from Kathleen Johns, who identified him as her abductor.

Who Was The Zodiac Killer? 

The mystery of the Zodiac Killer’s identity still hangs over our heads, decades after his killing spree in Northern California. Although his true identity has yet to be unveiled, the heinous crimes he committed are far from forgotten. In fact, there are still those – authorities and civilians alike – who hope that one day we will know who the Zodiac really was. 

Who Was Arthur Leigh Allen? 

One of the most famous suspects in the Zodiac Killer case was Arthur Leigh Allen. Suspicious behavior as well as a number of seeming coincidences have kept Allen as one of the primary suspects, even years after his death. Allen was arguably made even more famous as a Zodiac suspect due to the fictionalized version of himself in the 2007 film Zodiac. But who was Arthur Leigh Allen really? What do we know about him? 

We know that in 1966, he was an elementary school teacher. That same year, he hinted that he was near the location of Cherri Jo Bates’ murder shortly after it happened. Two short years later, Allen was fired from his school teacher job for molesting a student. He was forced to move back home with his parents at 32 Fresno St. in Vallejo. According to those who knew him, he had a difficult relationship with both his parents. 

We also know that Allen had peculiar interests that only made him more suspicious. In 1969, Allen made claims to his friend Don Cheney under the guise of writing a novel that Cheney later reported to the police. These claims included claims that he (or the hypothetical character of his novel) would kill couples, taunt the police with letters, call himself “Zodiac,” wear makeup to change his appearance, etc. He also discussed with another friend his fascination with the concept of hunting people – a sentiment the Zodiac later writes about in his letters. 

Allen died in 1992 of natural causes. Doubtless, there is much we don’t know about Arthur Leigh Allen – including if he truly was the Zodiac or if he was just a rather disturbed individual. Given his peculiarities, however, it’s little wonder that still today people wonder if he truly was the Zodiac.

Although the Zodiac’s true identity has yet to be uncovered, he left plenty behind for us to study. Perhaps through analyzing the words he left behind, this famous Northern California serial killer can finally be identified. The Zodiac’s Halloween Card 

On October 27th, 1970, the Zodiac Killer sent a Halloween Card to The San Francisco Chronicle. His penchant for picking out joke-y cards to send his threatening messages on would be well known by this point, after similar incidents with the Dripping Pen card and the Dragon card. 

It’s easy to see why this particular Halloween card would appeal to the Zodiac. It seems the card was meant to be anonymously sent to one of your friends because the message that comes already printed on the card teases the reader about the sender’s identity. It reads: 

“FROM YOUR SECRET PAL. 

I feel it in my bones, 

You ache to know my name 

And so I’ll clue you in… 

But, then, why spoil the game!” 

The Zodiac’s additions are an acrostic-style writing of the words “Paradice” [sic] and “Slaves” – a reminder of his belief that his victims will serve him as slaves in the afterlife. Then, surrounding the acrostic, he writes “By fire,” “By gun,” “By knife,” and “By rope” – presumably, hints at how he might kill his victims. On the envelope, he writes “sorry no cipher” twice, formatting his words to make a big “X.”

The Zodiac’s “Little List” Letter 

The Zodiac Killer’s Words Continue To Haunt Our Minds 

Although the identity of the Zodiac remains a mystery, we still have access to the words of the Zodiac himself through the many letters he sent. These letters, which detail his horrific plans and twisted reasoning for killing, offer insight into the man we otherwise know so little about. 

The Zodiac’s “Little List” Letter 

The Zodiac’s “Little List” letter, sent on July 26, 1970, to The San Francisco Chronicle, opens with more demands for people to wear Zodiac-themed buttons decorated with the crosshair symbol he often writes on his letters. He says if people will not wear “nice” Zodiac buttons then they should wear “nasty” Zodiac buttons “or any type of [Zodiac] buttons that [they] can think up.” If no one will wear any buttons, the Zodiac declares he will “(on top of everything else) torture all 13 of [his] slaves in Paradice [sic].” 

After detailing how he might torture his slaves in the afterlife, the Zodiac tells readers about his “little list.” It is a list of “society offenders” that he insists “would never be missed.” The implication, arguably, is that he could easily kill the people on his “little list” and get away with it. Then he claims that it “doesn’t matter whom you place upon the list, for none of them be missed.” 

The “little list” serves as a frightening reminder of the Zodiac’s claims to have taken many more lives than those of the victims we know of. How many more lives might he have claimed that we know nothing about?
