The Zodiac Killer Case And The Questions We Still Have

The Zodiac Killer case is undoubtedly one of the most famous serial killer cases in the country, and perhaps even in the world. More than 50 years after he began his killing spree in Northern California, we’re still looking for answers about the Zodiac Killer. Will his final ciphers be solved? Will new information be revealed? Will we ever learn who the Zodiac Killer really was?

Why Did The Zodiac Send Letters?

Although some questions remain unanswered, for now, the Zodiac Killer isn’t a complete mystery to us. His true identity was never discovered, but he revealed much about his personality and his motives by way of his famous letters.

Why would a serial killer send letters to the public? Why would he take such a risk?

The Zodiac doesn’t necessarily state his reason for sending letters, but the reasons become clear when you read their contents.

Firstly, the Zodiac reasoned that he did not need to worry about his discovery due to his letters. The combination of his cleverness and his belief in the incapability of the police, stated in his Bus Bomb letter and many other letters, meant to him that his capture was impossible.

Secondly, the Zodiac clearly longed to exert a sense of control through his letters. In his letters, he made many demands – from demands to publish his letters and/or ciphers to demands that the public begin wearing Zodiac Killer themed button pins – often accompanied by threats of what he might do if those demands weren’t met.

Thirdly, it is evident he delighted in frightening people. Through his mysterious letters – in which he both delighted in revealing the events of his past crimes and gave detailed accounts of what future crimes he might commit – he could elicit fear not only from his victims but from the public in general.
