Did The Zodiac Almost Get Caught Mailing A Letter?

The Zodiac Killer’s Identity Remains Unknown

The Zodiac Killer’s horrendous crimes of the 1960s and 1970s are still well-known today. If the Zodiac’s word is to be believed, he committed many more crimes than were ever officially linked to him. Given the nature of his crimes and the way in which he mocked the public through terrifying letters, it is little wonder many citizens remain dedicated to uncovering the last mysteries of the Zodiac Killer case – including the identity of the Zodiac himself.

How Often Was The Zodiac Killer Almost Caught?

Given the Zodiac’s frequent crimes and his bragging letters, one has to wonder how often he might have been caught if things had just gone slightly differently. In his letters, he references speaking directly to the police near the scene of a crime at least once. How many other times might he have been close to being caught only for him to slip away?

Was The Zodiac Almost Caught Mailing A Letter?

If you believe Arthur Leigh Allen to be the Zodiac, as many do, then it may surprise you to learn that the Zodiac might have almost been caught on his way to mail one of his famous letters. As our own Tom Voight explains in “Nobody Called Him Arthur: Pleasanton,” the Zodiac was known for mailing his letters from within the city of San Francisco. However, after 14 straight letters mailed from 1969 through 1970, the Zodiac broke his pattern. On March 13th, 1971, his letter was marked from Pleasanton California.

What does that have to do with Allen? Watch the video to learn more.

Los Angeles Magazine: Is Doerr A New Zodiac Killer Suspect?

Who Was The Zodiac Killer?

More than 50 years after his killing spree in Northern California, people are still asking the question – who was the Zodiac Killer? The man behind the horrific crimes that took place during the 1960s and 1970s was never caught – but concerned citizens and police forces alike never quite gave up on figuring out his identity. Is it possible that, now, more than half a century later, we can still identify the Zodiac Killer?

Zodiac Killer Suspects

If you’ve been following the Zodiac Killer case for some time, you’re familiar with the popular primary suspects. We spend plenty of time here on Zodiackiller.com discussing different suspects and the likelihood of if so-and-so could have been the Zodiac. Every now and then, public attention turns to a new possible suspect. Paul Alfred Doerr is just the latest in a long, long line of possible Zodiac suspects

Could Doerr Be The Zodiac?

While it is certainly worth it to consider new possible evidence when its presented, sometimes the evidence simply isn’t strong enough to concern those who are very familiar with the Zodiac Killer case. Our own Tom Voigt spoke out about Doerr, saying that he is “not really interested in Doerr.” Although many consider Doerr’s oddities enough to make him a suspect, Voigt hasn’t noted “anything of substance” to make him believe that Doerr is a viable Zodiac suspect.

“The bar is pretty high, as far as compelling Zodiac suspects. You have someone like Ted Kaczynski, who is kind of the champion of the handwriting similarities. And then you have the guy with all the coincidences and the incriminating statements, that was Arthur Leigh Allen.”

It seems much more likely that one of the more popular primary suspects, such as Arthur Leigh Allen or Richard Gaikowski, was truly the Zodiac Killer.

Two Unsolved Zodiac Killer Ciphers

How Long Will It Take To Solve The Zodiac Killer Case?

The Zodiac Killer case began in the late 1960s when the serial killer who would later become known as the Zodiac claimed his first victims in Northern California. Now, more than 50 years later, authorities and concerned citizens alike are still trying to solve the Zodiac Killer case and identify the man behind the horrific killings and threatening letters. How much longer will it take to solve this case?

The Zodiac Killer’s Ciphers

Undoubtedly one of the most defining aspects of the Zodiac Killer case is the Zodiac’s famous letters and ciphers. Oftentimes, his letters were a means to make both demands and threats to the public, as well as to mock those who were investigating the Zodiac Killer case. In their way, the ciphers too were a way to mock those looking for him – a way to tease more information while the Zodiac apparently remained confident he couldn’t be caught.

Only two of the four ciphers the Zodiac sent have been solved – and one of them very recently, in 2020. How long might it take for the final two ciphers to be solved? Will one of them give us answers that could identify the Zodiac himself? Many hope so.

One of the unsolved ciphers, cipher Z 13, is proceeded in the Zodiac’s letter by the words “My name is –.” Could it be that this cipher really contains the Zodiac’s name? Or will any solution only reveal a mocking answer? Only time will tell.
