Zodiac Killer Suspects: Rick Marshall

Who Was The Zodiac Killer?

The Zodiac Killer case is now decades old, and although progress has been made in solving the previously unsolved aspects of the case, we’re still a long way off from the answer everyone wants the most. Who was the Zodiac Killer? Will we ever know who was responsible for the brutal murders all those decades ago in Northern California?

Zodiac Killer Suspects: Rick Marshall

Many believe that that the Zodiac’s true identity has to be one of the high-profile suspects associated with the case. The names Richard Gaikowski, Arthur Leigh Allen, Richard Reed Marshall, and Lawrence Kane all remain closely associated with the Zodiac Killer case. Was one of these men truly the Zodiac Killer?

Richard “Rick” Marshall is one of the popular suspects of the Zodiac Killer case. Although he was born in TX, in the mid-1960s he moved to California, putting him in the approximate area of the Zodiac’s murders at the right time. He first lived briefly in Riverside, Cal. before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Why Was Rick Marshall A Suspect?

Rick Marshall first become a suspect when he made suspicious comments about the Zodiac Killer over his ham radio. He was even interviewed by Zodiac detective Ken Narlow. During the interview, he, of course, denied being the Zodiac. Want to read more about Rick Marshall? Be sure to check out the suspects page on Zodiackiller.com.

News Media: FBI and Local Police Have Pushed Back Against Zodiac Killer ID

Multiple Media Outlets Report Zodiac Killer Case Remains Open

National, and international outlets; NBC News, BBC News, and The Guardian, are reporting pushback against the claims the Zodiac Killer has been identified. The group responsible for the claim is known as The Case Breakers.

On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, the group announced, via a press release, that a now-deceased man named Gary Francis Poste was the Zodiac Killer. Fox News was the first to publicize the press release.

ZodiacKiller.com on Record for Calling the Claims “Hot Garbage”

On the day of the press release editor of ZodiacKiller.com, Tom Voigt, was interviewed and went on record calling the report “completely bogus”. We covered Tom’s initial thought in our previous article, Fox News: Cold Case Team ID’s Zodiac Killer, and followed up the Rolling Stone interview in the post titled Rolling Stone cites ZodiacKiller.com

NBC News: FBI rebuts claim Zodiac Killer case is solved

NBC News was able to get a comment from the FBI:

“The case remains open and there is no new information to report,” the FBI said of California’s notorious Zodiac Killer.

The Guardian: Investigation Still Open

In an article published Oct 8th, “Case of the Zodiac killer takes another twist – but police say it isn’t solved,” reports: Police say investigation remains open as former law enforcement members claim to have identified killer. The article continues, “However, police have said the investigation into the killings is still open. Law enforcement regularly receives tips about the case, including from people who believe they know the identity of the killer.”

BBC News: Authorities Rebuff Cold Case Team’s New Lead

BBC News also reports pushback from authorities, reporting, “Officials in California have said the man identified by private investigators as the so-called Zodiac Killer is not currently a suspect in the case.” The article continues further with more detail providing that both, “the FBI and local police have pushed back against the [Case Breaker] allegations.”

Rolling Stone cites ZodiacKiller.com

The description for the following Rolling Stone YouTube video reads: Despite what you may have read in the news, the Zodiac Killer has not been identified. That’s according to an expert on the infamous, still-unknown serial killer who murdered at least five people in northern California in the late-Sixties.

Video is Follow up to Published Article

The article published on Oct 6, 2021, predates the YouTube video by one day. The headline of the article, “‘Hot Garbage’: Zodiac Expert Calls ‘Bullshit’ on Possible ID of Infamous Serial Killer” is a quote from the editor of this website ZodiacKiller.com, Tom Voight. The headline is followed by the subheading, “Zodiac Killer: Just the Facts author Tom Voigt tells us why the new report about Zodiac Killer’s identity is “completely bogus”

Full Interview with Tom Voigt

In the Rolling Stone article, Tom is asked about the Case Breakers, the group that claimed to identify Gary Francis Poste as the Zodiac Killer. Excerpt below:

Are you familiar with the Case Breakers?
First of all, the funny thing is, I’ve never heard of any of these people that are these so-called experts. I have been doing this for 25 years and I’ve never heard of any of them. So that there are some red flags right off the bat. And then the funny thing is, they’re matching up lines on foreheads. No witness ever described lines on Zodiac’s forehead. Those lines were simply added by the sketch artist to fill in the sketch. The amended sketch, which is supposed to look more like Zodiac, according to witnesses, doesn’t really even have any lines. So they got rid of them. So because the witnesses were like, “We’re not really happy with that sketch that we gave you a few days ago,” they got changed. The lines went away. No witness ever described that.

Gaikowski a More Likely Suspect

In the same article. Tom Voigt is also asked about his picks for Zodiac Killer Suspects.

If you had to put your money on one suspect, who would it be?
Richard Gaikowski is my best bet. If I was an employer looking to hire the Zodiac, he’d probably have the most impressive résumé in my eyes. But the reality is that Allen is the suspect you just can’t quit. I just can’t quit that “Big Al,” especially now I’m going over all these old emails and tips and leads going back 25 years. And some of the stuff that was said to me about how it is just mind-boggling. Yeah. If he wasn’t, if he wasn’t the Zodiac, he might be responsible for some other murders.

FOX NEWS: COLD CASE TEAM IDs ZODIAC KILLER

Has A Cold Case Team Identified the Zodiac Killer?

According to reporting from Fox News a team of more than 40 former law enforcement investigators, journalists, and military intelligence officers, known as The Case Breakers, believe they have identified the Zodiac Killer. Adding to an ongoing list of Zodiac Killer suspects.

Cheri Jo Bates was the Sixth Victim

The link is Zodiac Killer Victim Cheri Jo Bates. Cheri Jo Bates, 18, was found dead in an alleyway in Riverside, California, on Oct. 31, 1966. The Case Breakers believe Bates was Zodiac’s sixth victim and have tried getting investigators to compare her DNA to that of Poste. In 2016, investigators received an anonymous typed letter from someone who admitted to writing the earlier note and said it was a “sick joke”.

Zodiac Killer as Gary Francis Poste

According to a Zodiac Killer press release linked on the Case Breaker site, there are 6 coincidences around the Cheri Joe Bates Case that tie the murder to Gary Francis Pope.

  1. Wristwatch with a broken band: This watch was available at military bases; Poste was a USAF veteran.
  2. Paint on the Wristwatch: Poste was a houspainter for over 40 years
  3. Size 10 military boot heelprint: Matches Poste’s size and style

  5. Forehead scars in police sketch: Poste had similar scars
  6. Matching mispelled words in Confession Letter and Holloween Card

Is The Answer In The Zodiac’s Ciphers?

Plenty of people who follow the case think it’s possible that the Zodiac could have given us the answer himself in one of his ciphers. The Z13 cipher is a 13 character cipher that is proceeded by the taunting words: “My name is-” Is it possible the Zodiac actually gave us his name?

Was It One Of The High-Profile Suspects?

The suspects that have arguably drawn the most attention were the four high-profile Zodiac Killer suspects. Richard GaikowskiArthur Leigh AllenRichard Reed MarshallLawrence Kane are all linked to the case. However, all of these men have since passed on. Could one of them be identified as the Zodiac postmortem?

Zodiac Killer Suspects

Learn About High-Profile Zodiac Killer Suspects

Those who have followed the Zodiac Killer case over the years remain determined to find out the truth about this famous serial killer. After haunting the Northern California population in the 1960s and 1970s, the Zodiac seems to have disappeared. However, the truth of his identity could still be answered. Are you ready to try your hand at solving this mystery?

Zodiac Killer Suspects: Arthur Leigh Allen

Before you’re ready to solve anything, you should be sure you’re familiar with the facts about the Zodiac Killer case. Although there have been many Zodiac Killer suspects over the years, there are a few that have drawn more attention than others. One of the most high-profile Zodiac Killer suspects was Arthur Leigh Allen

What Made Allen A Suspect?

Like with other high-profile suspects, there are a number of reasons Allen is still suspected to be the Zodiac. Allen was in Riverside when Cheri Jo Bates was murdered. Although it is debatable if Bates was one of the Zodiac’s victims, the Zodiac could have gathered information about her murder to later reference in some of his letters.

A friend of Allen’s, Don Cheney, also confessed to the police that Allen discussed with him details about a murder fantasy that matched many of the details about the Zodiac’s murders. Allen apparently told Cheney that he was planning to write a novel using these details, but that could easily have been a lie to disguise the truth.

Is The Zodiac Still Alive?

The Zodiac Killer Haunts Us Even Today

The tale of the Zodiac Killer isn’t one anyone is likely to forget any time soon. This serial killer spent the latter part of the 1960s and perhaps even the early 1970s hunting down victims across Northern California and mocking those who sought to find him out and make him pay for his crimes. The known facts of the Zodiac Killer case are horrifying enough on their own, but there is still so much we don’t know about this case. Who was the Zodiac Killer? Did he really kill upwards of 30 victims during his serial killer spree in Northern California? Will he ever be caught?

Can The Zodiac Killer Be Brought To Justice?

There are plenty of parties out there – both among authorities and among regular citizens – who hope that the Zodiac Killer case might still be solved. After all, two of the ciphers the Zodiac sent in all those years ago have been solved. The answer to the question “Who was the Zodiac Killer?” could be answered in the last two ciphers. Even if the Zodiac Killer is finally identified, though, will he be brought justice?

High-Profile Zodiac Killer Suspects Have Died Since Being Identified As Suspects

The most high-profile Zodiac Killer suspects have all since passed on. Arthur Leigh Allen died in 1992 at the age of 58 due to natural causes. Richard Gaikowski died of cancer in 2004. Richard Marshal died in 2008. Finally, Lawrence Kane died in 2010. If any of these men actually were the Zodiac, there will be no way to bring this famed serial killer to justice. The same holds true even if all these men are innocent. Any possible suspect might have since died from natural causes.

For one, his military history and training as a medic would shed some light on some of the Zodiac’s behaviors, such as cutting off the shirttail of one of his victims. Gaikowski was also in close proximity to a few of the victims associated with the Zodiac before their assaults and was seen attending the funeral of one of the victims.

Gaikowski worked for a counterculture newspaper called Good Times, which was associated with radical ideology. The publication sometimes ran sensationalized headlines about the Zodiac Killer which seemed out of place among the other content of the newspaper.
